For almost two decades, Texas native Cody Johnson has been delivering incredible contemporary country music. His traditional style has endeared him to the majority of listeners who grew up listening to the greats, such as Wille Nelson, George Strait, Hank Williams, and Merle Haggard. Johnson has often been compared to Strait, but the award-winning performer takes this as a compliment. In fact, he was heavily influenced by Strait’s neotraditional country style, which is evident in his single, “Guilty as Can Be.”
In 2006, Johnson dropped his debut album, Black and White Label. Released through Cojo Records, the independent effort featured his father, Carl, and drummer, Nathan Reed. His dad would later leave the band and be replaced by a new member. In 2009 and 2011, Johnson released two more studio albums, Six Strings One Dream and A Different Day. By 2014, Johnson finally made his breakthrough with his fourth album, Cowboy Like Me. The record peaked at number 7 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums and Top Independent Albums charts. Meanwhile, the album also notably released his first single, “Dance Her Home.”
In 2016, Johnson soared to number 2 on the Top Country Albums with his follow-up record, Gotta Be Me. The album spawned two gold-selling hits, “With You, I Am” and “Wild As You.” Johnson released his major label debut, Ain’t Nothin’ to It, three years later. The album dropped via Warner Music Nashville, topped the Billboard’s Country Albums, and peaked at number 9 on the Billboard 200. The effort spawned the platinum-certified hit “On My Way to You” and two gold singles, “Nothin’ On You” and “Dear Rodeo.” Meanwhile, Gotta Be Me sold over 500,000 copies in the U.S., making it his best-selling album to date. Cody Johnson received his first Country Music Association Award nomination for New Artist of the Year that same year.
Last year, Johnsons won several awards, including two CMT Music Awards and two Country Music Association Awards. Most of the accolades were won by his new single, “‘Til You Can’t,” which was spawned from his 2021 effort, Human: The Double Album. That same year, he performed the song at the CMT Music Awards. The following year, his performance won the CMT Performance of the Year.
